Hi,

I was wondering if an OSX install involves doing a startup from disk, as I have the problem here, but would like to update:

Thanks,

Do you have access to an External Firewire HD by chance?

How else would you do an install? Well, you might be able to do an install by means of network, but then you need someone else with a Mac and then transfer it, or do a Firewire start-up.
Best thing is to get an external device, or replace your internal optical.

what actually happens if your Mac is running and you put the CD in?

Is the CD bootable at all? I mean is it an original instal-CD?
