Hi guys-

I'm wondering if it's possible to make a link to my user folder directly in the left hand bar of my Hard disk icon...

It's annoying having to go through Users / myname / documents etc etc...

It works on folders and the Finder icon, but not in my HD window...

possible?

I'm not sure if I'm missing something here about what you are asking ... but isn't this just as simple as dragging your home folder over the the left sidebar ?? Of course, you'll have to drag it to the lower half of the sidebar .. folders aren't allowed up top with volume (such as hard drives, CDs, etc)

Yup, Panther 10.3.5

Every time I drag a folder there, it snaps back to where it was....

Hmmmm...

This *only* happens when I do it in my hard disk window, not from the finder or folder windows....

Sorry if I'm not being very clear! I'm quite hungover.

HD Window = Finder Window

So you are not able to add folders and have them stick, correct?

Exactly ... we're not understanding here what you mean by HD window. The hard drive window is just another finder window. What is different ?

Is this what you're trying to accomplish ?? (note my home folder in the sidebar)

If you're running Panther, your home folder is already in the sidebar (unless you've removed it).

Good point. Instead of trying to drag it over why not go into Finder->Preferences->Sidebar and check your home folder "ON". That's just another way to accomplish the same thing and it might work where dragging doesn't (for whatever reason).

Hi everyone- apologies for not making myself clear-

I would like to have a shortcut to my 'user' folder in my finder sidebar. I like to have nothing on my desktop apart from my HD, and when I click on that, I get this window:

http://www.mysteriousal.com/finder.jpg

Note how there is nothing in the sidebar apart from STUDIO G5 (my hard disk) and Network. I'd like to have my 'al' user in here.

When I double click a folder to open in a new finder window, I get this:

http://www.mysteriousal.com/folder.jpg

No problems with having folders and shortcuts in the sidebar here. Why can't I do this in the window above?

My preferences are on, like this:

Hope this is a little more clear...... can anyone help?

al

You are going to kick yourself; however, all you need to do is click the button circled below is all...

In the first picture, your sidebar is turned off. Click the "pill" button in the upper right-hand corner of the window to turn it back on.

Closing the window w/o navigating should save the window state as default.

BTW, when the sidebar is hidden, the Finder window will be standard Aqua -- gray gradient title bar, no window edges. When the sidebar is visible, the Finder window will operate in browsing mode and appear as brushed metal.

Edit. Or, see above.

ACTUALLY LOL!

Thanks so much to all of you! I will now take the liberty of actually kicking myself!

*Edit* Just kicked myself. Was quite awkward and didn't actually hurt, but I taught myself a lesson

Thanks again!
