I have a possibly dumb question about Apple's Software Update feature. When it comes up, as it does every week, those boxes marked with a "check" are the ones you're supposed to update, correct?

I ask this only because I have a powerbook with an Airport Extreme card -- and I thought this week's update was for me, and that it supposedly would improve reception, etc. I have a 12-inc PB, with Airport Extreme, not Express, and it seems to me I shold begetting this. BUT -- that box is not checked on Software update. It shows up in the list, but it's not checked as something I should do. (On the other hand, why does it show up at all?)

So -- what's the deal here? What am I missing?

I thought that was odd too. I just checked it and installed it, but wondered why it was not checked by default.

Checked items are merely recommended updates. All updates that display can be installed on your system.

on the same topic.......sorta:

if there's an update we don't want to install (i.e. the Airport updates on my desktop since I don't have an airport card in my desktop...) is there a way to get rid of the update in the software update panel so that it doesn't show up perpetually?

Yup, select the update(s) you want to ignore so that their titles are highlighted in blue and choose "Ignore Update..." from the Update menu in the menubar.

So that begs the question, why is the Airport update not a recommended update for systems with Airport cards installed???

software update doesn't seem to take that into account. my non-airport g4 tower was consistently prompted to update its airport software until i set SU to ignore it.

But the question I'm interested in, is not is the update listed, but rather, is it checked? Ie, is it recommended? (assuming that's why it's sometimes checked and sometimes not).

And so, why are some updates recomended and some not?
