A frined of mine has a strange problem, that I cannot seem to find solution to. His computer will not mount Video DVD-s. The computer mounts data DVDs that he has written on the computer, but all the movie DVDs stopped mounting.

When he goes to Disk Utility he can see the disk under the drive's list, but the mount button is inactive and only the eject is active. Thus he can eject the DVD, but not mount it. CDs seem to mount just fine. Only movie DVDs do not mount, which worked not too long ago.

Any ideas what could be causing this? He rapaired the permissions, but no change.

In sys prefs there's some option to launch a program when inserting optical media. Maybe he has it set to something that crashes preventing the Finder from finishing mounting or something.

Yeah, the he told me that in the System Preferences he has everything set right. My guess is the same as yours, that for some reason the mounting process crashes, or hangs somehow. I will ask him to take a look at the Console log and system log files...maybe that will help some.
