Should one find the new Security Update (2004-09-07) unacceptable, what are the steps necessary to "revert" to the previous Security Update (2004-08-09)? Is there an easy way or is reinstalling the OS required?
I have the 2004-08-09 version on a different drive, so I am hoping that if I don't like the new updater, there is some way to easily copy over/replace the new files with the older ones. But I don't know what/where they are.
Or, is the entire concept ill conceived (AKA a dumb idea)?

I'll try to provide more information then Powaqqatsi did.
There is no undo, or uninstall of an update but you can go the archive and install route and then install upto the level you were before. A little bit of work, but if you were one of those people who found the latest update breaking something then its viable.
As I'm sure you know the archive and install replaces the system, saves the user area in a different folder for you to act on it.
All in all, I usually wait on updates to see if anything shakes out, like ftp stopped working. Its far easier (waiting) then reinstalling panther.

Thanks Mike!
Your time, patience, and explanation are most appreciated. And I have learned a bit from you as well. Perhaps one day I’ll be able to assist others as you have done with me.

It's rather simple if you have an external hard disk or another disk partition available.
Use Software Restore in DiskUtility.app or CCC to make a clone of your system prior to the installation of the security update.
If all goes fine keep it that way. If you don't like what the update does, just copy back your cloned disk with the prior system version.

A great idea Simon. I have used CCC several times and am embarrassed that I did not think of that. For shame!
Now, I may well give that new updater a try.
Many thanks!

No problem. Good luck!
I think it's a good idea to have a clone partition around before you do critical things in general. That way there's always a safe way back if something gets screwed.

Yes, thats an excellent idea one which I'll be doing myself shortly.
I'm looking for the perfect enclosure to go with my G5. I thought I saw one in macaddict or macworkd that had the aluminum look but I tossed the mag before writing the down. O well.

Security updates don't all update the same thing(s), so even if your original idea was possible, you wouldn't revert to a previous security update. You'd just repeal the last one you applied.
