I needed to start reusing my old iMac dvse for a while. It had Panther installed and up until the last time that I shut it down 3 months or so ago worked fine.

When I switched it on today I got a black screen saying darwin wanted my id and password. I tried typing them in and then got a kernal panic. I tried restarting from the install cd (an upgrade disc from Jaguar) and it kept on freezing.

At this point I booted from the os9 disc reformatted the drive, reinstalled os9 zapped the pram and then started to install osx Jaguar. Unfortunately I still can't get anywhere. It starts to boot off the Jaguar CD but then I get a message saying "Installer has quit due to unexpected system error Exit code 0.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? os9 seems to be working ok but isn't very useful to me.

Could be the RAM or other hardware defect.

I don't think so, the disc checks out ok in disc first aid and it's running fine in os9.

You might have to have 9.2 installed to install Jag.

It turns out that it was a memory chip gone bad after several years after all. In OS9 there wasn' t any problem but it tripped up OSX. Thanks for the help especially TETENAL
