hi everyone, i'd like to ask something about itunes.

in my dorm, it seems like somebody has itunes and i can see his library. it happened once, then it never showed up again. but the weird thing is, my roommate has itunes, and HE can see both mine and that other guy's library - but i can only see my roommate's.

i setup airport express in my room, so i share music with my roommate via wireless, but the third guy (alex) comes from the ethernet jack. i know this cause when my roommate turns off his wifi, he can still see the third guy (alex). this proves that alex comes from ethernet.

now here's the thing. the internet connection on the AP-express connects to one of the three allocated jacks for internet in my room. the same group that my roommate uses. so it SHOULD show me alex's library, and it did once, but not anymore. here's the twist - when i plug in directly to that cable, i see alex's library, but i was unable to load it or stream anything. it always says some port are not open on his computer or mine, and i can't load grant's either. but grant can see AND LOAD alex's music through his ethernet.

this seems very complex, but please read through it and maybe give me advice on how to solve this. so basically, my roommate can see an itunes library shared through rendezvous, but i can't.

I don't know exactly what's going on, but make sure that the Airport Express is not set to give out IP addresses. If it is, then everyone connected to it is on their own subnet and won't be able to see anyone using Rendezvous outside of it.

how do i know it's not giving out each computer a private IP address? i didn't mess with most of the settings. just the names and general stuff. at the moment, in the 'Networks' tab, "Distribute IP Addresses is checked, and Share a Single IP Address (Using DHCP and NAT)" is selected. the drop down menu under it shows "Use 10.0.1.1 Addressing"

ow, here's another weird thing, now when i connect the ethernet cable DIRECTLY to my powrebook, i can't access the web or do anything at all. i can see grant and alex's library, but NOT load them or stream any music.

i find it very odd that i can no longer use the cable directly for internet.

So turn off "distribute IP addresses," like I said.

you didn't read what i said either. the guy who's connected to me via the AP express network shows his itunes library just fine. the problematic one is the guy who's on the wider network, which comes from the ethernet jack somewhere in the building. or does the IP distribution still apply cause i'm inside my own bubble??
