I have a family pack of Panther, and one of the computers I'd like to install it on is a G3 iBook with a CD Drive. I didn't realise this, and have the DVD version of the OS which has been fine for the other Mac. Is it possible to copy the Panther DVD onto a few CDs to install it on this old iBook?

maybe you could do something freaky like and boot the laptop from the desktop's dvd drive over a firewire cable.

Make a disk image of the panther DVD, copy it over the network to the iBook, mount it and install it- there is no need to boot up from the OS disks to install, just open the installer app in the mounted disk image.

Mounting an image of the Panther DVD will not work. You need to actually boot from the DVD to install Panther.

The easiest thing for you to do is:

1) Put the iBook in firewire disk mode (hold 'T' key down when starting the iBook).

2) Connect the iBook to a Mac with a DVD-ROM via a firewire cable.

3) Run the Panther installer on the Mac with the DVD-ROM, but select the iBook hard drive as the drive to install to.

Why, it works with Tiger?
Plenty of people are installing it from the disk image, surely Panther is the same.

Can anyone confirm that I can install it from a disk image mounted on the G3's desktop? I can easily copy it over via an ethernet connection, however I don't have a firewire cable.

I installed it onto my iPod from a disk image so it should work.

Uhm, the retail version of Panther (which you'd have bought if you really bought the family pack) has always shipped on CDs, no?

I smells a rat, I does.
