i have a LOT of files like this in my users prefs...
not identified in any way.
anyone have an idea what they relate to?
(hope it's not something i'd have to be, uh, embarrassed about)...
cf#Rf4cu
cf#aCmjX
etc etc
(btw i just trashed them all, and all seems well...)

Try opening the files with TextEdit - maybe there will be a clue as to the owning application in there.
Otherwise, you can check the creator code on the files - maybe they will have the creator code of the owning application.

I had this one: cf#k1DGI
In TextEdit (removed most of the lines of AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEAyAEAAQAAA):
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>AppleNavServices:ChooseFile:0:Position</key>
<data>
AVABaA==
</data>
<key>AppleNavServices:ChooseFile:0:Size</key>
<data>
AAAAAAFvAjA=
</data>
<key>PLGD:iTunes.rsrc•AAC Encoder</key>
<data>
</data>
<key>PLGD:iTunes.rsrc•EQ</key>
<data>
AA==
</data>
<key>PLGD:iTunes.rsrc•iTunes Visualizer</key>
<data>
</data>
<key>PLGN:iTunes.rsrc•AAC Encoder•Custom</key>
<data>
</data>
<key>PPrf:DAAP:C63461861981BA09:%1</key>
<data>
etc...
Mine was created and last modified on Jan 10 2004, so I guess it's not used too much.
Edit: No, the smileys are not secret messages from Apple developers

Have you had iTunes crash on you recently?
BTW, you can check the "Disable smilies in this post" check box to get rid of those smileys that aren't supposed to be smileys.

interesting...
i run a couple of "support" apps with itunes (like imote).
sometimes, if i close itunes, it opens again; will check & see if these files pop up then.
maybe that's it.
anyway, seems less mysterious!
thanx
