Hey, anyone know what pref file is in charge of app and file type association?
Also, do you know if throwing that file away will cause any unwanted side effects or will it just set association back to default?

Try deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist.

I think that's where it's stored.
