when you install panther, you will be given options on installation--format install, archive install, or upgrade. if you do the latter two, your os 9 installation should be preserved. you won't need to reinstall it.
I'm going to be erasing drive so can't leave OS 9 on. Well I guess I could reinstall either just OS 9 or OS X with OS 9 from the Ti install discs and then do an upgrade or an archive and install with the newly purchase Panther OS X.
I'm a beginner at OS X installs best procedures so appreciate the tips.
