My company uses Windows Messenger to communicate internally using SIP. Is there a client for OS X that will do the same? (I didn't see anything in MSN Messenger 4.0 that mentioned SIP)

Hmm - I doubt that MS would use a standard like SIP (without breaking it).

Anyway - X-Lite (http://www.xten.com/) is a good free SIP softphone.
