Have never liked that big "boooooong" chime when you boot up your Mac. Is there any way to get rid of it? Or is it encoded into the boot chips? The sound must be stored on a ROM chip somewhere because it plays before the HD spins up.

I do not like it when I do not hear it at start-up! It's a sign of life, a healthy life.

Heck of a lot better than that ancient "BEEP!" you get with most other PC's.

if you mute your mac before you restart or shut it down the sound won't be there when you boot up. that is the only way i know how to get rid of it.

be warned. i unknowingly had it muted before i restarted and i did not hear the noise and i started to freak out until i saw the grey screen. that sound lets me know my mac is working

Just stick a pair of headphones in the headphone jack.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

or get a miniplug adapter (at radioshack, for instance), plugged into the headphone jack and connected to...nothing

then there wont even be a little sound (as there would be from headphones)

THIS one i have done before!

I remember the SoundBlaster Live killing that sound somehow...perhaps the M-Audio Revolution would do the same, though they probably put a slight bit more effort into making their card decent.

if you didn't happen to mute your mac before shutting down then holding the mute key during startup should suppress the chime as well. i haven't tested this one tho.

That little sound has become a pop culture (obscure-ish) icon. It always puts a smile on my face when I hear it from TV shows or movies.

What I really miss is Oscar the Grouch singing "I like trash" every time I threw something away on my LCII. Does anyone remember that programme? It played several different clips, etc. for assigned events.

Cheers!

do you know the story about this?
the developer got a lot of hate email...
apparently, parents would come into the room to find their kids trashing every file in sight, just to see oscar the grouch pop up from the trash....yikes!

Thanks those links worked! I actually disconnected the PC Speaker in my computer so I wouldn't have to hear the beep on my windows machine.

My biggest gripe with the chime though is what if I need to reboot in a quiet environment such as a library or study area? I'm sure it'd bug people all of a sudden "boooong"!!!

Ruahrc

the mute tip is handy though that way I can silence the chime at will on other's macs if I need a reboot there, and I won't need to install any software.
