a friend of mine gave me a bunch of quicktime videos that have the extension ".m 1"....none of the players that i have tried (quicktime, vlc, etc.) will play them. when trying to open in quicktime, i get the message "you may experience problems blahblahblah you don't have the required compressor needed" the audio comes through but not the video. what should i do? thanks in advance

Wrong forum but...

Open the file with QT then select Movie>Get Movie Properties. Then select Video Track from the left drop down box, then from the left drop down select Format. This will show you which codec it's using. You could also download VLC frrom versiontracker and see if it will play the file.
