I am a new mac user and i can't really get the hang of iPhoto. I know the basics, imports, edit...etc

but when i go to a site to upload my pictures or send a picture via ichat i have problems finding it.

i go to the pictures tab, then iPhoto, then there are a several options, all which dont have lead to me not finding my picture

i did name the picture so i dont know if that makes a difference or not..

this is really annoying me .....

besides that i have no other problems with my new mac

iPhoto provides many tools to help you organize your photos. It doesn't organize your photos for you except by date and film roll. Do you know the name you gave the photo? Search by that. Did you put it into an albumn? Browse through that.

i think i might know what your problem is.

unless you're uploading your entire library (which you probably don't want to do) or uploading an entire album (which you say you don't have) you have to select the specific photos you want uploaded. you can select multiple photos by holding down the shift or command keys while clicking them with your mouse. thing is... it's difficult to see when a photo has been selected in iPhoto -- only a faint blue line appears around selected photos (this took me a little trying to figuire out as well).

ahhh... i just re-read your post. forget what i said above. i thought you were using the auto-upload feature of iPhoto. but what it sounds like you're doing is trying to find the photos through the finder. don't do that. the way iPhoto organizes pics in the finder is pretty screwy. instead, you can just drag the picture you want to use out of the main iPhoto window to wherever you want to put it. very simple.

the easiest thing to do is:

1. locate the picture in iPhoto.
2. drag it out of iPhoto to your desktop (this will not remove the picture it from iPhoto, it'll just make a copy of it on your desktop.
3. upload the picture to the net from your desktop.
4. delete the picture from your desktop.

hope this helps!

take care

If you want to iChat the photo to someone, all you have to do is drag the photo from iPhoto into the iChat window.

If you want to edit the photo, you just drag it onto Photoshop (or whatever) from iPhoto. When you save the changes in Photoshop, iPhoto is automagically updated. You can even revert to the original image in iPhoto.

Really, your only problem is that you've come from Windows where you have to think "how does the computer want me to do this", instead of the Mac way which is "what is the obvious way to do this".

As for the behind the scenes storage system that iPhoto uses, it's pretty easy - it's just organised in nested folders named after year/month/day (of the date the photo was taken) But you should never need to dick around with that...

You also don't seem to be able to get the hang of putting threads in the appropriate forums. You want "Software."

I think the original poster was trying to find the actual photo file in the finder. That can be tricky, and isn't really necessary. Actually, you want to just drag them from the iPhoto window (you may need to drag them to the desktop or to another folder as an intermediate step). If you're sending them to someone or uploading them to a website, you might also want to resize them first (export them and choose a smaller size).

It's very important to understand that iPhoto is supposed to be a photo catalog application. As Apple puts it, it is your digital shoebox. In other words, you're supposed to use the iPhoto application to keep your photos in one place and find them. iPhoto's importing, editing and exporting tools are basic and meant to support that primary function. It's a LOT easier to organize and find pictures through iPhoto than through the Finder. Simply scrolling through the iPhoto Organize view makes it easy to find the pictures. Exporting from iPhoto is as simple as dragging a picture out of the Organize view and to the place you want to put it -- an iChat window, the desktop, a mail message, etc. Drag and drop is the key to working with a lot of these apps.

FWIW, the iPhoto folders in the Finder are set up hierarchically by date: by year (e.g., 2004), by month (e.g., 09) and by day (e.g., 23). If you edit your image in iPhoto, a folder called "Originals" is created inside that day's folder, otherwise what you see within that day's folder is the latest version of that picture. The date used to organize the pictures in the Finder is based on when you took the photos, not the date when you imported them. So, for example, if you took pictures on July 4, 2003 but imported them today, you would find the images in Library > 2003 > 07 > 04.

Regardless, it's much easier to find images through iPhoto itself where you can peek at all of your pictures' thumbnails, divide the Organize view by film roll, list pictures in that view a few ways, create albums, assign keywords, add comments, batch change picture names, and rate the pictures.

Apple's philosphy is to have the right tool for the job rather than creating some swiss army knife that's jack of all trades but master of none. Obviously, the Finder is that catch-all for file organizing, but iPhoto and iTunes are each specialized tools for their specific media.
