Vague recollection that is is feasible to connect one FW drive to two macs so they each see the drive, but this goes back to the first FW drive spec I read in 1995 so that's a rusty memory and perhaps no longer a feature.
[It's a friend's PB I'd like to do this to, so I'd rather not experiment, and T-driving is too inconvenient, and no lan connection handy.]

Only one Mac (the one that mounts the drive first) will see the drive.

FireWire, by specification, does allow that, but the Mac OS FireWire drivers do not.

Not quite true.

Connect the Firewire drive to one Mac, then connect both Macs (assuming they're both running OS X) via Firewire.

If necessary, activate Firewire as a network interface in the System Preferences. Apple File Sharing has to be activated on the machine that the drive is connected to, as well.

On the machine that the drive is *not* directly connected to, you can connect to the other in the Finder via Apple-K or the Network icon. Once you enter the account/password, you will be given a list of drives/folders to connect to.

Select the hard drive, and all is good.

If you need regular access, drag an alias of the drive (or anything on it) to the sidebar of the Finder window or the Dock or wherever; the drive will automatically be mounted when you click on the alias - provided the machines are connected, of course.

What do you mean "not quite true"? It's absolutely true!

File Sharing is not the same thing!

Well, his question was about "connecting", so while your statement is true, the implication that it is impossible to connect two computers to one Firewire drive is not.
