Having two problems with Apples calibration
1) when you get to the step of DISPLAY ADJUSTMENT, and you are asked to select the BRIGHTNESS so that the grey oval looks not too black... well the grey oval just does not appear ever. I put brightness high/low, never see this grey oval. I noticed this problem with my G4 a few months ago. Just got G5 and problem remains, so I have no idea where to set brightness.
2) After I do calibrate, when I reboot, the monitor reverts to one of the CRS canned settings instead of my calibration.
Any comments appreciated.thanks.

Before you begin the calibration process, be sure that your contrast is turned up all the way. Then you should be able to see the oval.

Are you using a display that has it's own brightness/contrast settings? Have you turned both of those all the way up? If that doesn't help things, then you probably have a bad monitor... probably the backlight.

Well... you didn't answer my question about turning up the on-screen settings, so there is still that. I am assuming that we are talking about a non-Apple monitor, so it is very possible that the monitors simply are not as good as Apple's.

Check out a program called SuperCal. Much better than Apple's calibration.

LIsten, I just bought a brand new Aritsan ($1700), and also had a Sony Triniton, both had --as well as this NEC, contrast set to 100%.
I just don't see that grey oval, I remember seeing it maybe two years ago, and poof, it's gone. So now I guess at brightness, what, 40% is good?
I assume I'm the only one with this problem.
I do need Apple's for 2nd monitor, but I may give up on perfection for it.
Also, the settings wont stick after a reboot, the OS creates new profile and goes to that.

If you are using Apple's calibration tool in Panther, there would be no oval, but the Apple logo instead(I assume this is what you mean).
It sounds like this may be a permissions problem, so repairing permissions may help. Also, if you have both displays connected to the same graphics card, try disconnecting a display and calibrating one display at a time.
