Are any linux filesystems locally mountable? Ext3... XFS?

(in other works can I put an ATA drive formated with a linux filesystem in my OS X box and read/write/mount it... or firewire...etc)

Out of the box, no.

But there have been open-source efforts to port some filesystems from Linux to OS X, thought I haven't tried them and have no idea how successful they are.

Ext2 For OS X

Status is listed as "Production/Stable".

As others have said, there is no way of doing this out of the box, but there are third-party projects which allow some systems to mount. Be wary, however, of things like resource forks and other HFS features that many filesystems simply don't support.
