In case you (or anyone else with a similar questino) wanted more info

Install the OS onto the drive as you would an internal drive then to boot from it either select it as the boot drive in the system prefs and restart or hold down option during start up to get to a window that lets you choose from all available start up drives.

Careful, if the drive is an external firewire drive, I believe you can only do this on machines newer than the G4 Yikes model. As long as it is a G4 faster than 400 MHz or is a G4 with AGP instead of PCI, you should be fine.

I have done this on my pismo many times, so that is incorrect information.

I know for a fact that you cannot boot from an external firewire drive on the G4/400 Yikes! machines but that you can on the G4/AGP models. I don't know where the Pismo ranks in all of this.

EDIT: According to this page, the only machines with firewire ports that do not allow booting via external firewire drives are the Blue and White G3s and the Yikes! G4s.

Yes, from FireWire cases. But Macs can't currently boot from USB 2.0 drives.
