There once was an app called Teleport.
http://abyssoft.com/

But it looks to be gone since apple hired him as a worker. Hopes are that it will be intergrated into the os someday soon. But till then has any one ever worked on a program to
a : Share a mouse over two or more networked computers.
b : Quartz extreme render windows and tool menus over onto different computers even if the other computer does not have or is not open of the same application ?

My idea would be that quartz extreme could make a duplicate rendered window that could be sent to a different computers screen there by having more space on the one computer but still haveing power to run other apps of the second computer instead of just acting as a screen.

it should be possible somehow.

Your link is effectively dead... I got an idea about what it does from the versiontracker review, but I think that the number of places where this would be truly useful are small. This comes from someone who has 4 computers in front of him... I should be close to the target audience.

a: I am not sure which way you mean this. If you mean to allow another computer to share control over a computers desktop, then you already have some choices: Apple Remote Desktop, VNC, and Timbucktoo.

b: NeXT was capable of this, but they gave up this ability in order to allow for hardware acceleration without Herculean amounts of effort. QuartzExtreem would be insanely difficult to do this with... and would suffer enormous penalties because of the low bandwidth (relatively) provided by network connections. And Apple is moving even further away from this with the CoreImage suite.

VNC only shows the screen in a new window and is bloody slow.

I would think otherwise. If the coreimage and quartz extreme are just CG card hardware renderings of windows then why can it not just make a duplicate and send it over to a different computer if all it is , is a graphic resembeling a window or toolbar eg: photoshop.

I have a few computers like an imcag4 and have plans to get something else to but can not let go of the imac g4. { love it to bits }. If you have ever screen spanned two monitors together you can see how it can share the tollbars and windows problem is that it is still just one computer, two computers could get more power and use out of older computers.

And networking could be from fire wire or dirrect linked network cables. As it just needs to be fast enough to just put a window on the other side once there it does not need to be moved around to save some speed.

Do you know why VNC is bloody slow?

Why do you think that quartz extreme would work over gigabit ethernet when it won't work on PCI?

You are basically talking about specialized versions of VNC or the likes that will display on a slave computer a screen/window that is being rendered by a master computer. If this window ever changes, all of those changes will have to be computed over whatever dirt-slow-speed network is being used. And yes, gigabit is dirt slow when you are talking about uncompressed high resolution realtime video. You will not be able to scroll at reasonable speeds. You will not be able to watch video on this extra monitor. etc... etc... etc...

My recommendation for your next machine purchase... buy a Power Mac so you can connect multiple monitors to it. I have a Digital Audio G4 with three monitors connected. I would not trade this for a 20" iMac G5. I spent the $3000 3.5 years ago knowing that I would get a good 5 years out of this machine. I also knew that if I bought a $1500 computer, that I would be wanting a new machine within a year. I still expect to get another couple of years out of this machine before buying a new machine. Invest the money... the purchase satisfies you longer when you spend the money all at once.
