i have my computer set to ask for a password after the screen saver has been activated. about half the time, after entering my password i get nothing but an active cursor on a black screen. if i reactivate the screen saver and switch to another user, the other user shows up perfectly, but nothing i've managed to do will reactivate my account. i'm forced to restart and i lose and browser windows, etc. that i have open. this is a hug PITA.

anyone have any idea what's causing this? using 10.3.5 on an iMac G5, though the same thing happens on my Ti400 Powerbook.

thanks!

I had simlar problems on a Powerbook, so I turned that feature off. Basically, when I woke it up, it was taking so long thrashing around to put up the password box, that about 1/2 the time it timed out and went back to sleep again ! I turned off the password thing, and voila - instant wake from sleep.

There is a way of running a script when you sleep the machine, and I had one set up that switched me back to the login screen. However, I was finding that even this too an age to run, so the Powerbook was thrashing away as I was stashing it in my bag. Not good, so I turned it off. If you want to do this tough, search on www.macosxhints.com

You have anything running that would put up an authorization dialog in the background? If your keychain locks and your email program checks mail for example.

In early versions of Panther this would sometimes cause the problem you describe for me. I filed a bug with Apple and wrote a script for my mail check that makes sure the screen saver isn't active before it checks mail.

I've had this happen to me many times too, with the exact same symptoms. I haven't been able to figure out what causes it, although for some reason I think it only happens when iTunes is running. Then again, I haven't really got any proof of that...

Actually, it hasn't happened in a long time <<touches wood>>

Same for me as well on a powerbook. The Macosxhint referred to above works very well for me as an alternative. I'd suggest trying it. Search for "sleepwatcher". I find sometimes the script hasn't finished executing before the machine sleeps, but all this means is a slight delay on wake-up as the screen finishes rotating to the login window. It should in no way increase the time it takes for your machine to sleep

I used to have that problem on my PB 1.25, but it seems to have gone away. It may have been due to the most recent .5 update, but I can't be certain.

funny, i never had the problem BEFORE the .5 update.

i did use the OS X Setup Assistant to copy my account from my PowerBook to my iMac, so it's possible that it may have "inherited" the condition.

also, regarding sleepwatcher and other sleep scripts... i'm not sleeping the machine when this happens, i've just activated the screen saver.
