OK I want to mount my network drive on my powerbook (running panther). I know how to connect to it, but I don't want to reconnect everytime I boot up. I wanna do it like windows has "map a network drive" so its there all the time. Is there anyway to do this ?

Connect to the network drive. Save any usernames/passwords needed to connect by choosing the "options" button before connected and "Add to keychain". While drive is mounted, go into System Preferences -> Accounts -> Startup Items. Drag the currently mounted network drive into the "Startup Items" pane. Next time you log in (or restart if you are on a single user system with auto login), it will pop right up.

That's odd, mine works fine. Here' what mine looks like in startup item (OS X recognizes it as a folder). How do you intially connect to the network drive (do you use Connect To ... what ? Server ? Network ? Folder ?
Also .. is the network drive running on a Mac, a PC, or is it just a standalone network drive. The way you connect will vary depending on what type.

I am trying to connect to a shared HDD on my PC. My PowerBook is connectiong to my router through airport. OSX sees it as a folder in the start up iteams till I restart. than it says "unknown". I usualy connect to the network with the "connect to..." option.

Oh, so its an SMB share. Do this: mount the drive. Drag it to the TOP item in your startup items (rather than the bottom as shown in my pic for an afp share.). Dunno exactly why, but it likes being the first item. I just reconfirmed this with my roomie's PC shared drive. Worked fine. Of course, it will also automatically open a finder window with the contents of that share ... there is some way to suppress that (I think) but can't remember how right at this second.
