I just got my new Western Digital Raptor 74GB drive and wana use it for my boot/system drive on my G5.

Two questions...

1) can some one give me a step by step on how to take my current 250MB Maxtor and use it as my User/data drive, and make the new 74GB the boot/system drive.

2) what folders from the now boot drive can I transfer over to the user data drive without harming the was OSX runs? i.e. can I transfer my Appliactions, Documents, Library, System folder to my 2nd drive? Or do some of those have to remain on the "boot" drive?

Thanks for the your patience..

You should really take a gander around http://www.bombich.com/ A lot of the explanation (and even the tools you'll need) can be found here.

I added the same drive not too long ago, but fortunately I had less than 60GB used on my original drive (160GB). I was able to just clone my old drive on to the new Raptor.

I use the Raptor to boot from, removed the OS from the original drive, then just moved the data files and miscellaneous applications over to the (old) data drive.

The 10K Raptor is a remarkably fast drive. The whole computer feels so much more responsive (which is of course the reason for getting such a drive). And thats saying a lot, given how responsive the G5s are to begin with

I couldn't agree any more! I did exactly what you did... I used carbon cloner and only had 23gb to close as my system was/is pretty much fresh out of the box. I just gave advice to a fellow MacNN(er) to do the same as we did. I am noticing large improvements, especially when opening a large file from my user drive with an application in my system drive, the multi-threading (if that's the proper term) is apparent, and with the SATA bus being capable of 150Mps it's still not taxed by both drives!

What do you think of the noise level btw with the seek head when it runs? It doesn't bother me, but the other user was worried about sound.

The Raptor is a bit louder during read/write operations, but not so much that its bothersome. When idle, the drive is silent.
