I changed the provider for my website, and now I can use SSH. I already use it to do some stuff like copying or deleting files or directories etc. I prefer it because it's a lot easier. The only thing is I wonder how I can transfer files to my local computer, and how to put them. Now I still fall back on ftp, but I would prefer everything via SSH.

use scp, or sftp if your provider supports i (they probably do). i use MacSFTP for sftp, and the command line scp tool for scp.

"man scp" is your friend

If you're terminal unfriendly, have a look at Fugu, a graphical scp and sftp client. Works like a dream.
