I have a Quicksilver 2001 DP800 with no extra PCI cards or hardware. Lately (ever since OS10.3) the machine will not go to sleep by itself. It used to, but it's been a long time.

I can force it to sleep and it sleeps away all night, but it NEVER goes to sleep by itself. The monitor dims out, the screen saver kicks in, but no sleep.

Any tips? I've looked for a preference file to delete but can't find anything related to "energy saver" or sleeping.

Are there any apps I should be looking for that could be preventing sleep? Any processes I should kill? I don't run anything at login except a couple port blocking commands in the firewall and "Shadow Killer".

Try a PMU reset.

ACSA 10.4/10.3, ACTC 10.3, ACHDS 10.3

I've pressed the CUDA switch. No change.
I reset the nvram in open firmware. No change.
I unplugged my canon scanner. Nope.

What else is there? The monitor goes off, but the machine will not sleep by itself. seems kinda odd.

I guess I'll check if it works is <gasp> OS9.

Update: Nope. Still doesn't work. Any more suggestions?

Everything I've got on sleep ...

Not Sleeping Right .. first thing .. repair permissions .. reboot.

Delete Power Management Prefs
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist.

Fax Setting Disturbing Sleep
The solution is to open the Print & Fax pane of System Preferences and uncheck the "receive faxes on this computer" box. Having fax reception enabled prevents your Macinosh from going into sleep mode normally.

Try these energy saver settings ..
Preferences/Energy Saver
"Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for" .. at Never
Check "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible".

I created a similar thread about my G5. Do you have applications running when you expect it to sleep? Some applications can prevent deep sleep; I suspect the culprit for me was Mail. Try closing all applications and then see if your G4 will automatically go into deep sleep.

It doesn't matter if applications are running or not. It won't go to sleep. I can even quit the finder.

Although maybe I should check the "processes" that are running.

I seem to remember it working with 10.1. After Jaguar, it stopped. Didn't work with Panther. I did an upgrade to Panther and not a clean install. Perhaps I have a straggling app or process keeping it awake?
