If I went online and deleted a .mac e-mail only account, would all the e-mails stored on the .mac server be deleted? Would it be instant or would it just delete at the end of the paid period (1 Year)? Anyone ever do this?

Yes, it is instant. Yes, all email is deleted immediately. When you buy email only accounts on .Mac, you're only really buying the "slot" which remains for the paid period... you can switch the email account using that slot as many times as you want, cancelling and recreating.

If you are trying to upgrade an e-mail only account to a full .Mac account, this can be done simply by logging into the .Mac "Account" page using that email account login and password. It will ask if you want to upgrade to a full .Mac account.

why not just download them to a local email client like mail or entourage? This way you get to keep all your email messages.

You have to have a .mac account and then you can add "e-mail only" accounts for I think $10 more a year.
