i wanna update my friend's imac to osx (i have the firmware & everything).
but...want to back her up first.
she's in 9.0.4, and my firewire drive isn't mounting.
so...
wanted to bring her up to 9.2.2.
my big concern:
if i run the upgrade (9.0.4 to 9.1, then 9.2.1, then 9.2.2), will her data still be on the hard drive?
dont want to risk losing her work (as in "job work"!)
?????

under normal circumstances, those minor updates would never do anything to the data on the drive - it is just an update. but, as with any update, there is always the possibility of trouble, however unlikely.

or should i try a usb drive??
i know the upgrades shouldnt wipe anything but i want to play it safe...

If your drive is not mounting on her iMac, it's very possible you won't be able to use target mode, either. It's worth a try, though. If that does not work, the next easiest thing is to connect your Mac to hers through ethernet. That solution is a thousand times better than trying USB, which would be an exercise in unadulterated frustration. Good luck.

Use your iPod!
You can try target disk mode (on her machine) to another Mac with FW.
If you don't see her drives, then reboot the other Mac (leaving hers in TD mode).
If that doesn't work, check the firewire bus (on your mac while connected) in the system profiler. If it says "No information available" her FW ports might be fried.

her firewire cdrw mounts (but freezes when we try to burn to it...at "finishing").
funny, when i plug my usb drive in, it does not appear on the desktop. but when i unplug it, i get a message that i should unmount it first!
so...can i upgrade from 9.0.4 to 9.1 (etc) without losing documents, etc??

I've found that running external drives that are formatted with perhaps journaling or the newer OS X disk drivers (can't tell which) don't seem to work under 9.
The solution I use is simply booting the machine from my Powerbook with target disk mode into X, and then backing up onto my Powerbook.

Great point, goMac. I thought about that briefly. The question is, however, if this problem was simply due to an absence of classic drivers, then shouldn't OS 9 have said that it could not read the drive?

The Classic drivers at this point simply seem to work for the Classic layer. I'm not exactly sure, I've never done any real research into it.
