I have Mac OSX 10.2.8 on an iMac...
I have an iomega Zip drive as a peripheral....
Up until recently, I put my Zip Disks in (100mb) and I could read them... Now it tells me Mac OSX cannot read any of the files on the disk... I can Ignore (does nothing) Eject or Initiailize...
There ARE files on these disks that it read before... and that I can read on my PowerMac when I fire it up... using system 8...
Have I done something?
Is there a pref I can change somewhere?

If you remember, back in day when zip drives were the rage, there was a major controversy concerning the "click-of-death" noise that for many signaled the untimely demise of either their disks, drives or possibly both. Your did not happen to emit any such click, did it?: I never had a problem with my zip disks, but I suppose I was rather lucky. Assuming that you did not perform any major software upgrades and that this just popped out of left field, it sounds like your drive died.
I did not see the part in which you stated you can still read this disks on your old Power Mac. Are you using the same USB drive to read the disks on the old Mac? Any issues with disks would be seen globally - on all users. If you're using the same USB drive just fine on your other Mac then I'm at a loss to explain the problem.

I doubt his drive died since he says he can read them under OS 8 on his PowerMac, but that OS X sees them as an unrecognizable format. I don't see how this is possible since X can read anything 8 could (and a bit more I'm sure). Also, didn't they eliminate the COD problem? I haven't hear about it since the SCSI Zip drive age.
Anyway, I don't know what the problem might be. It's a USB Zip 100, no? Could you bring it to another OS X machine to test it? Have you tried it under another user account on your machine? Those things would help see if it's a software or hardware problem.

I had a similar problem, how identical I dunno. But here’s how I solved it.
Insert an old disk, one that can be sacrificed and then, when asked if you wish to eject or initialize, go ahead and allow the disk to be reinitialized.
After that, insert one of the good disks and see if the system is now “cleaned out.”
Why or how that fixed things, beats me. And for sure I can’t assure you that this technique will work for you, but it may be worth a try.

Thanks for the suggestions... I tried different disks, and they all came up that way... I will try the "sacrificial" zip disk tonight... thanks... I'll report back
