Embedded desktop buttons at Apple Stores

I went into an Apple Store the other day and noticed that they had some buttons embedded in the desktop (Register for Genius Bar, Apple Store Online, Internet, etc). They were actually stuck into the desktop and I was wondering if anyone knows how they did that. I couldn't find any running apps that would provide the feature which leads me to believe it is a customized version of OSX or some daemon.

It's just a simple app with buttons.
