this was worse than i thought:
all my pref panes are fine, except:
energy saver only opens after about 3 clicks, and keeps reverting to reduced performance.
i tried-
deleting the appropriate cache files, pref files.
tried a "test" user (it worked for that user)
tried replacing my prefs etc with the test user prefs.
tried with added ram removed.
ran_
disk first aid, repaired permissions, tech tool pro, disk warrior.
nothing is working.
in console:
2004-10-15 18:29:52.135 System Preferences[382] [NSPrefPaneBundle instantiatePrefPaneObject] (/System/Library/PreferencePanes/EnergySaver.prefPane): should only be called once
2004-10-15 18:29:52.138 System Preferences[382] *** NSRunLoop ignoring exception 'NSRangeException' (reason '*** -[NSCFString substringWithRange:]: Range or index out of bounds') that raised during posting of delayed perform with target 1c6e80 and selector 'setCurrentPreference:'
any ideas? before i archive & install w/o saving my settings...
edit:
replaced the energy saver prefpane (from the original powerbook disk); still no good.
also: tried opening from the panes themselves (in the system library folder; every other pane opens system prefs!

Just to confirm, you deleted:
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
and
com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
These two files are updated whenever I change settings in the energy pref pane.
Since the pref pane works on another user, I think it's the plist, not the pref pane itself.

The console log is simply saying that it can't set the preference pane, which you already know, so that doesn't help you much. I wonder if the probelm isn't perhaps elsewhere, and simply showing itself as a symptom. By that I mean perhaps it's the System Preferences application itself that has a problem, or perhaps it's a hardware problem. Have you looked at Apple's KnowledgeBase yet?

Try looking for .plist files related to the Energy Saver preferences themselves. (I'm not on a Mac at the moment so I can't tell you which ones). Delete those in addition to the others people have mentioned.
Also, try making a new user and trying things out. That should start you with a more clean slate, if you will.
