Hi everyone,
I'm sorry to ask this switcher/newbie question but I have an urgent need for this feature, and my searches haven't been successful so far. Here I go:
In XP, you can select multiple files, whatever their name and extension, and rename the first to some name like "log (32).txt" and all the selected files will be renamed "log (*).txt" where * is the number of the file, starting at the number you gave, in this example it's 32. This is extremely useful when you bring multiple files coming from different folders into one, and you want to rename and number them.
Can you help me do this in OS X?
Can this be done in the Finder alone or do I need the Terminal?
Thanks for your help.

There's this:

http://www.publicspace.net/ABetterFinderRename/

but it seems rather expensive for what it does.

I should imagine that there are free shell scripts / applescripts that do this kind of thing - give google a go.

also look here:

Thanks. BTW, I never ask a question on a forum without at least 15mn of Google before that (but I'm not saying there's nothing in Google, I just didn't find it!)

For 20$, I think I'll rather start learning how to use and write AppleScripts scripts!
Thanks to the location with sample scripts you showed me, I'll see what I can do with the "Replace Text in Item Names.scpt" script.
But if someone has a better answer for me, do not hesitate

AppleScript is your best bet. For fairly simple tasks like this, it's easy to pick up. That's how I got started with it.
