Internet connection when logged out

I was wondering whether it is possible to keep my internet connection alive when I log out. I have a cable modem, but suppose that's not really important. I want my webserver to stay up and online and want to use SSH from the outside. I prefer to log out when not at home.
I thought I saw this option somewhere, but can't find it anymore, and don't know if this really was what I saw. But I suppose this should be possible.

It stays up already. You can ssh or visit your website whether or not you are logged in.
If you are dialed-up through a 56K modem, you'd need to check a box that keeps it from disconnecting on logout, but for any broadband type connection, it stays connected the whole time the box is up and running.

I thought that was the case. What happened was (1) I had energy mode set so the system would go to sleep after a while, and (2) I have PPPoE (cable), and that requires a login I believe. But coincidentally I just ordered a Netgear firewall/router (will arive in a week), so that will take care of the connection. I've set the system not to go to sleep, and then logging out won't be a problem anymore I suppose. For the moment I use the screensaver as alternative security.
Thanks for the reply!

PPPoE was indeed your problem.

Ah. Well PPPoE has similar options to PPP over dial-up. Just go into the PPPoE options in the Network tab and make sure it doesn't disconnect on logout (unchecked by default on my machine) and that it doesn't have an idle disconnect time (which it does by default on my machine). Then you can log out like you want to. But you'll want to keep your machine from going to sleep as well.

Well, that was what I was looking for. Those PPPoE options! I knew I had seen the checkbox to stay online after logging out, but didn't remember where. Thanks, it works now!
