Sorry, did not get it--understand it. Is this a bit ordeal, getting size of stuff in your trash?

It's just a script that you can save as an "Application" and put it in your dock (or wherever)...it will spit out how many items you have in the trash, the size, and other information...then delete them as well if desired.

the easiest/fastest way (that is, the way with the least overhead) would be to open Terminal and type, without the quotes,
"du -sh ~/.Trash"
The above link contains an AppleScript that will basically run this for you (if you keep scrolling down you'll see an AppleScript that does much more than just tell you the size.
There are variations on the above line that you can type into Terminal to give you the same info in a slightly different format or something. If you don't mind the terminal, one of these solutions would be good probably to help speed things up if you want to check it often. If you are only kinda-okay with the terminal, then just type that line exactly as-is when you want to. If you don't like the terminal, it's really not that tough to click on the trash icon, create a new folder on the desktop, move everything from trash into that folder, and get info on the folder... it really depends on how much you care.
Personally, the only reason I ever care how much is in the trash is when I want to know how well I have done cleaning up and trashing large files I no longer need... I usually just look at the available disk size in a finder window before and after the trashing and do the math myself. If you need it so you feel safe emptying the trash and aren't worried that maybe you accidentally trashed more than you meant to, I'd suggest you use the AppleScript in the link posted by manofsteal

Another way is to simply open the Trash window, select everything in it (Command-A) and Get Info on it (Command-I).

I'd drop Apple a request asking them to add this info to the Dock Menu for the Trash. I'd never use it, but some people would find it useful and I doubt it would be very difficult for them to do.

if you do a "command-A", "command-I" on an empty trash, it will just say "calculating size"
(a bug, as far as i'm concerned...altho it's easy to see an empty trash)
otherwise, it may be doing just that...calculating.
if nothing happens, take some stuff out, try again??
