This is a very interesting idea by Apple...it will probably/unfortunately promote more "leaking" of the Tiger builds; however, at least Apple is getting money for some of them this way...

I'm a little confused since I see little differences between this "Tiger Early Start Kit" and the regular Select accounts for ADC. For me it's just a marketing stuff, the devs would still get Tiger seeds if they have Select or Premier accounts, no matter if there is "Tiger kits" or not...

** unfortunately promote more "leaking" **
I'm sorry but I don't see how this a major problem for apple. Enthusiastic mac fans enjoy playing with the latest software, whether its beta or not. I fail to see how this harms apple's bottom line in any way.
If people are going to pirate software, they're going to pirate software, whether its GM or pre-release.

They could take off the code-level tech support (what is it, 2 incidents?) and the hardware "discount" and I'd spend $175. I just can't justify $500 for a package that includes things I won't use.

I think it's a pity that Apple does no longer send prerelease versions to student developers. Before Mac OS X 10.0 came out, student devs got all developer and beta releases. Even the final version was delivered two weeks before Mac OS X 10.0 was officially released. But nowadays, student developers no longer get any prereleases.

It's not like your missing much. As a select developer, all Apple has done is send me the WWDC build of Tiger.

The "Tiger Kit" is simply a rebadged Select developer account as far as I can tell. I suppose they're just trying to sell Select accounts by advertising the fact you'll get a new Tiger build with it. AFAIK Select and Premiere members should be getting or have the new Tiger (WWDC keynote or later) builds.

I went ahead and purchased the ADC Select membership. Getting early Tiger builds will be fun and LEGAL, and will be helpful to my business. Also, the money saved on future hardware purchases pretty much makes getting ADC now a wash. Getting a GM copy of Tiger at $129 actually put me ahead.

They only ever did that for ADC Students with Mac OS X. They didn't do it with any previous releases. You got final versions, but no prereleases.

The difference is that they are bundling the WWDC videos related to Tiger. (Although it does say that the same DVD will be made available to existing Select members later this month.)
Otherwise, yeah, it's just a promotion. But that's a good thing.
And, yes, some Select members have received seeds newer than WWDC. I couldn't say for sure but the number/quality of bugs you logged on the WWDC Tiger seed is probably a factor (grin)
