------------------------------------------------------------------

...using the "Network" link in the upper left pane of the Finder Window...

This is two computers, one machine is a g5 running 10.3.5 and the other is a g4 running 10.2.8, connected with an ethernent cable. Both have often connected before and all Network and Sharing settings are correct and RemoteDesktop sees and actuates the g4 from the g5 just fine.

But occasionally when I follow the steps to connect, using the "Network" link, the system will hang with a spinning beach ball and I'll have to relaunch the Finder.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, this is very annoying.

Thanks and best,
Kent

I don't have any specific suggestions for you, but I would like to point out that I have experienced flaky behavior with a PB G4 and PM G5 when ejecting (mounting usually goes just fine) a file share volume over airport.

Specifically, clicking eject or ctrl-clicking to eject doesn't do anything and sometimes when it does appear to eject properly, a warning will appear some moments later saying it couldn't disconnect. Rarely, the finder will also go into fits and need restarted.

So, I hope that in 10.4, networking kinks like that this get straightened out.

I see the spinning beach ball when it tries to connect using the method you described above. For this reason, I don't use it, but connect directly using the IP address.

While you are connecting the two Macs directly, I assume you have assigned static IPs?

I see problems when using DHCP with a computer running sharing, as the IP addy will change, and it seems OS X is using some cached info to try and connect to it? I have since assigned static IPs to the computer doing any file-sharing and I then don't have the problem.

How do you do this?

I've tried connecting using the ip address - using the Go menu, but I get the same results: Spinning beach and NO CONNECT.

Kudos to all that Appl e has done with the osX system, but this is crappy...

So how do I connect two machines and file share?...

best,
K

...and the update is that I _can't_ turn Personal File Sharing on on the g5 machine. It unclicks itself as soon as I click it on. All the opther options in the Network prefs work fine except that oine - there's no turning it on.

It sholdn't matter if I'm trying to connect to another machine FROM this one - should it? - but it might indicate a potential problem with this machine... (obviously there's something...)

I can't help but wonder if there's something wrong with one of the machines. Have you tried any other file-sharing setups with either of the computers? It may be something in the OS, but since the problem doesn't seem to be widespread, I'm thinking that it may be one of the machines themselves.

Well, I wonder that too about the g5. My other machines connect just fine to each other.

The logs say this:

2004-10-23 04:38:54.674 System Preferences[1946] ### Error:-1 File:FileSharing.m Line:227

It did work fine at one time and it's also happening as well when I use the Root account, which I practically leave alone and haven't fiddled with the system settings in that account at all. It's started happening, it seems though, only after installing the 10.3.5 update...

Another thing is that often the machine will not let me connect to my Airport - tells me that "There was a problem connecting to the Airport" and that's all. I have to wait a while and try again and it will then connect. My other machines have no problem connecting to the Airport.

And another thing - curious, worrying - I just ran Software update - thought that maybe something in there would fix something - and it's telling me that I don't have permissions to install All of the currently available packages. It seems that I now don't have permissions to write certain temp files, and I can not install packages - I get a mysterious error. But I'm Admin.

The logs say this:

2004-10-22 23:41:55.063 Software Update[888] can't create temp directory
2004-10-22 23:41:55.076 Software Update[888] session:itemDidFail:Java142Update2-1.4.2 Update 2 (Make sure you have permission to write to /private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate, then try again.)

and:

2004-10-23 04:46:38.083 Installer[2257] Exception raised during posting of notification. Ignored. exception: Some files for Snapz Pro X 2.0.1 Installer may not have been written correctly. (code 1)

But that doesn't seem to tell much. Humbly, I ask - WTF?

Well, I did a software restore to 10.3.3 and things work properly immediately, as they did - I connect to the other machines on the network as expected. So not sure if something was 'corrupted' or if there was an issue with the 10.3.5.

Thanks for the notes,
K
