Hi people-
OSX has started acting strange.
Sometimes, on restart or wake from sleep, my HD icon has moved to another place on my desktop!
Recently, when I capture a screengrab as a PDF (apple+shift+4) the icon that appears on my desktop is a quicktime symbol, when it used to be a paper (file) symbol... Why?
And thirdlt, I have a font in my trash. When I try to empty (or secure empty_ trash, it says it couldn';t delete it because it is in use- even though I have no applications running!
Is my G5 haunted?
Woooooo!

boot from your system disk, and run disk utility.
repair permissions.
put the font in one of the font folders (try library/fonts).
perform a magick ritual.
most of the above should help...

Have you changed the default application to open PDF files? Make a screenshot, then Get Info on the PDF file that results, click on Open With, and make sure it's set to Preview. If it's not, change it to Preview and then click Change All.
As for your stubborn file that won't delete, try Force Delete (available at versiontracker.com). It should get rid of the file. Careful with that program, though, it will delete anything you tell it to. If you tell it to erase the hard drive, it will...

Hi guys-
Well, I tried looking at the 'Open with' option, and it still says preview, although it's still the Quicktime logo. Not sure why this is happening, But I can live with it
As for starting from CD and repairing permissions.... what exactly does this involve? Is it any different from just repairing permissions normally?
Will I risk losing any of my data / settings etc this way?
Are there any pecautions I should take beforehand? Maybe grinding up some animal bones? lighting some candles? Listening to records backwards and chanting.... sorry.

Repair permissions is NOT the equivalent of "rebuild desktop" in OS 9. It's not going to have a thing to do with this.
Too much voodoo amongst Mac users

Could you post a screenshot, so that we can see exactly what the file looks like?

Hi guys-
Sure, here is a screenshot:
www.mysteriousal.com/Picture-2.jpg
I'm now also getting a very strange sound from my machine. It sounds like the processor making an electronic noise, NOT the usual fan noise. It comes on in quick, random yet constant bursts, and seems to happen totally randomly- wether my machine is doing nothing or not.
I am really starting to think something is going wrong...
The noise especially is worrying me!
Can anyone rteccomend any sort of diagnosis feature or something?
cheers-

This is not the processor 'clicking' noise, but a softer, sharper, more random sound....

I am running a DP 2.0 G5.

From your screenshot, I can only guess that your LaunchServices caches are corrupt. I would go to the root of your hard drive, then go to Library/Caches and delete any file with LaunchServices in its name. I would also go to Library/Caches in your home folder and delete any LaunchServices files in there, if there are any. Then reboot and see if the icon still does not display properly.
