I've been trying to ftp stuff on and off my tivo & xbox and have been running into very slow transfer speeds...

I've tried transmit, fetch, and terminal to transfer, and I can't get anything over 3 MB/s. (but mostly around 1 MB/s)

From my windows 2003 box, I can transfer up to 12MB/s (normal is around 8-9MB/s) using FlashFXP.

This is on a 10/100 router, and the only clients transferring data are my Powerbook and xbox or tivo.

Is it an issue with the network stack? Or am I using the wrong programs?

are you trying to ftp a lot of small files or a few large ones? you might want to try a console ftp program like ncftp which comes with osx and see how it is...

however, you should know that the tivo and xbox are not very fast computers and were never made to have fast file transfers on LAN. the fastest i've gotten with an xbox is around 3M/sec, and it really depends and what OS you boot (xbmp or ex).

Windows may also be incorrectly reporting it's speed. You may also want to check your network settings and make sure you have everything correctly set.

I'm trying to transfer large files.

for example, a 50mb mpeg2 file to my xbox takes 47 seconds on my mac. (evox dashboard).

The same file takes 6 seconds on my PC.

The claim that the the xbox and tivo are not very fast computers has gotta be the worst excuse I've heard. They both are 200+ mhz and have 10/100 NICs. The tivo NIC is running off USB2.0. I have gotten 12MB/s to the xbox and 8MB/s to the tivo.

Xbox Media Center (XBMC) gives me the best speeds. I regularly get 9-10,000+k/s using Transmit. Not sure what is causing your problem. I'm using an iBook with a Netgear MR814 router.
