Hello everyone,
I have 2 questions about the IBook, I'm running Mac OS X version 10.3.4, 800 MHz PowerPC G3 and 256 MB SDRAM. I'm a new user to macs and would like some help. Thank you in advance.
1. When in "System Preferences" I click "Accounts" and have "System Administrator", and "USERNAMEHERE", when I'm at the log in screen both of these accounts show up. How do I configure it so that Admin doesn't show up at all and only "USERNAMEHERE" shows up with the corresponding picture next to it?
-After it is disabled like I described you can enable it to show by pressing, "down arrow followed by Option + Shift + Enter" and an alternate login appears for admin.
- Basically what I'm trying to do is have one main account for a person with some privilages disabled and then have and Admin account that is "invisible" to the regular user.
2. This may seem as a silly question but how do I delete a program? Ex. I have Quicktime and I would like to get rid of it. Is there an "Add/Remove Programs" as in Windows? Do I just drag the program to the trash?
Regards,
Spartak23

just drag the app to the trash and delete it. sometimes apps install support files and such in the library you can just search for those. but ya its as easy as dragging it to the trash.

QuickTime is a required system component. You can trash the QuickTime Player, but I wouldn't.

But -- just to be clear -- dumping QuickTime Player won't affect the integral system components of QuickTime in the least.
If you don't like QuickTime Player and want to use VLC or MPlayer or whatever alternative instead, go right ahead and trash it.
re: not showing an Admin user in Login Window - Hmm. Sorry, I don't believe there's an option for that (or at least no GUI option). However, you can have a dialog requesting the user to enter user name and password instead of showing a list of all users. Sys Pref > Accounts > Login options button > Display Login Window as Name and password. Alternatively, you can set to auto log-in and the main user will rarely encounter the login window (unless he or she chooses to log out instead of sleep / restart). Can be set in the same place.

You can set some users to be hidden from the login panel specifically, but I can't remember the details of how it's done. However, TinkerTool provides a simple GUI to hide all admin accounts from the login panel which is what you want, anhow...

You are right. I wasn't clear enough about that.

You can dump it, but I would keep it. Just in case.

To make an account invisible, just go into the netinfomanager (Utilities folder) and then select the user (under the Users folder) change the UID (User ID) to anything under 500 (eg. 401) and save changes. This will make the user invisible for all practical purposes. You can still log in as this user if you type in the name and password at the login screen (I think you are right on this down arrow then option shift enter)
One other thing you should do if you decide to do this is correct the ownership on the invisible users home directory... from the terminal type the following...
sudo chown -R /Users/<username> <username:admin> <username>
That should do it.

You should also make sure to change the owner id of every file that that user id owns. Things can get a bit wonky if you don't.
The other thing is that if you are trying to limit that one user some, why not simply change the user into a limited user and start restricting what they have access to? You could even use the simple finder option to guide users to only those applications.
And on a more general note... you should always give more information with your questions. There is a good chance that someone can come up with a better solution to your root problem. If you keep narrowly focusing on the specific problem you are at you will blind yourself to other options. And by asking a question like that you are putting blinders on the answers.
