So, I need to send out a fax, but I don't have a fax machine, and instead of running to the nearest Kinko's, I remembered that there's the Fax option when you Print in Panther. My question is whether it is possible to send a Fax just over the internet from my Powerbook.

From Page Sender Help ..

Faxing ultimately requires a voice phone line. Page Sender can use your Apple Internal Modem (or an external modem) to connect to a voice phone line directly. Page Sender can also serve as a client for several fax-via-Email services (efax.com, jConnect, MaxEmail, EasyLink) which maintain the phone line and modem for you (and charge you a fee for that service). Since faxing occurs over a voice phone line, it has nothing to do with DSL or cable modems.

While Panther's built-in fax capability is fine for receiving faxes, I've found that it's really poor at sending faxes. Smile On My Mac's PageSender is a fully featured, terrific fax program that is definitely worth the cost of registration. I switched to it when our fax machine died and have been completely satisfied.

Nevertheless, you can print to fax in Panther, if you connect your computer's modem to the voice phone line.

All fax machines are connected to the phone line. Never to the Internet.

O.K., help me out a little, here. When I first got Panther, I know I tested the fax and it worked. But recently I needed to fax something, and everything went well, except that I was never asked for a number to fax to, so naturally it failed. Modem dialed, etc, but with no number entered it did not know who to call. What am I missing after all this time? Where/when do I enter a number to dial?

Thanks in advance!
Mary

When you press "Fax...", the first field in the dialog is the To: field. If the recipient is in the address book, you can type their name, otherwise type the phone number.
