Recently, about every other link that I click in Safari comes up as a bad link the first time I click on it but loads fine if I click on it again or reload the page. I have cleared the history but it did not help.

Any suggestions?

TIA

What is your internet connection type ? Sometimes high speed ISPs will 'drop' your connection after a few minutes of inactivity. The next time you click a link, it will hastily reconnect, but the first click ends up being a "dud" (because there is a lag of a couple of seconds before it reconnects). Does this happen after you've been sitting viewing a page for a couple minutes ? If so, I'd guess this is the problem.

There are ways to force your ISP to maintain a connection. I'll describe a few if you think this might be your problem.

I have cable DSL but I don't think that is the problem. I could click a link within a few minutes and it will come up as a dead link but if I click it again it will load fine. I am pretty new to Mac so I was not sure if there was a cache that could be cleaned up?

1. Command-Option-E or Safari > Empty Cache to clean the Safari cache.

2. Are you running any Safari hacks or additions, e.g. Pith Helmet, SAFT, etc.? If so, they may be the problem.

Frankly, I use OmniWeb. Beats Safari by a mile in terms of function.

3. You can also check Console for clues when the problem occurs. Launch Console (in Applications > Utilities) and check both the console.log and system.log logs for messages that may be written therein after you encounter this problem.

To open the console.log and system.log files, in Console select File > Open, then select:

- Open Console Log to open the console.log file
- Open System Log to open the system.log file.

Note: the console.log file may open by default when you launch Console.

If messages related to the problem appear near the end of these logs at the time the problem occurred, copy and paste them into a reply here for analysis.
Good Luck!

Wow, I'm having the exact same problem. Started about a week ago. It's very strange. Everything's fine in Firefox.

Yeah, this seems to be a Safari-only problem. Never happens in the other browsers.

I have been experiencing the same problem in Safari. It is happening to other people, make me wonder.
