You can try making a "Disk Image" of the CD and just mounting the image when you want to use the software/game...may or may not work depending on the application.

Not sure if that trick still works under 10.3, but it did up until 10.2 & earlier....I did it all time in OS 9 with some ancient programs that I had back then

Again, it depends on the application. Some have more stringent checks that don't get 'fooled' by the disk image tricks.

Grateful for this thread. Nice to heard that the Disk Image trick does not, in fact, work for all applications. That's been my experience as well. Some games just don't recognize it. It is a drag, to always have to find the damn CD first before playing.

We had a thread on this not that long ago. If you have Toast, you can try and create a disk image. Then move the disk image to whatever folder you want, lock it and then when you want to play, simply mount the disk image via Toast.
I've done it with C&G, Unreal 2004, AvP 1 and 2, Civ3 and Risk (running latest version of Panther on a PB17).

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

Toast is completely unnecessary. Simply use Disk Utility to create a "New Image From <your disk drive with the disk inserted>".

Well, as far as creating the image, no, there's no difference. But more applications are fooled by an image mounted by Toast than by an image mounted by Disk Utility.

It works perfectly under 10.3 - thank god. I hate having to play starcraft with the CD in.
1. OPen toast. put the CD in of the game: I assume this is your final goal, File->save as disc image The output should be on your desktop with an ending with .toast

2. take the CD out and drag the ".toast " file on the toast icon in the dock and under utilities choose mount disc.

your done - you have an image that is a CD on your desktop. No go game on.

I think this works with halo also (since after one updated, the game required a CD)
