Is there a way to make perfect copy's of cd's using OS X? Basically, I want to do byte for byte copying, so audio cd's will be recognized and be affiliated with CDDB entries, and use whatever the format of the original disk was, so, for example, I could also copy windows CD's. How do I do this? I have tried using disk utility, but the option of "make image from device" is always grayed out when I have my optical drive selected. I have tried using the dd command, but the images it makes are never able to mount correctly, always returning an error of no mountable file system.

Built-in to OS X/ free ware preferred, but commercial software acceptable if there is no other way. I am also comfortable using the command line if it is explained.

By the way, I only have the one optical drive.

How exactly does toast work when copying cd's? The site is not specific. Can I make and save a disk image? Will it keep the format, etc. the same, so I can copy windows cd's?

Check out this freeware app called FireStarter FX . I think it will do what you're asking.

I've used it before for its overburning capabilities, and it hasn't failed me yet.
