It's been a long time since I've partitioned a disk. How do I partition my boot volume without losing my current installation and data? Disk Utility doesn't allow me to do this.

As rj says, the very act of partitioning a disk will hose whatever data is on there. You'll need to backup all of your current stuff to a different location, partition the drive, and then copy it all back to the partition you want it to occupy.

There are a few ways to do this and there is some good free software that is built for it. If you have an external place to hold your installation temporarily, I'll give you more info. Otherwise, the question is moot.

Alternately, if you have a .Mac account you could manually back all your files up to CD or DVD and then save your prefs/addressbook/bookmarks etc. to .Mac. Then partition your drive, reinstall and update the OS, bring your prefs/addys/bookmarks back down from .Mac and manually copy your files back from the CDs/DVDs to their proper locations.

I found an app called iPartition on Versiontracker but wish these features were free and built into the OS. The long way around is so tedious, especially since some applications require reinstallation from source and internet authorization.

once again, partitioning has been covered many times here. you can have a look at iPartition and Volumeworks - while they may do what you want, it is still recommended that you back up beforehand.

My 2cents: If you're going to pay $35-$60 and still need a place to back up your files, I'd recommend putting the money to use buying an external hard drive instead. You'll be able to do what you need to do partition-wise AND have a place for the REAL and REGULAR backups that you should be doing if you value your data.
