I'm kinda simpleminded, always simply starting my Mac's since the Classic II, but never seen this before?! I suspect it's somthing to do with Unix, but dunn'no?

Darwind/BSD (jim-cancils-Computer.local} (console)

Login:

....is what I see in the upper left of the screen. I've tried my name in login...and then when pswd comes up I put that in...but nothing?! Is there a workaround? Is there a way in?

Hell, I just usually startup and do my thing.. I did do the upgrade over the weekend but it didn't get the whole thing - only the Quicktime upgrade....and it was after that that I'm stuck with this screen. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

....luckily, I have my iBook without the "upgrades" to make this post.

sounds like you've set it not to start the windowmanager at some point, either that or some app you've installed has done this.

try loging in to this, type your username at the login: prompt and then type your password, this won't be displayed on the screen. hit enter when your done and it should give you a prompt like

[jim-cancils-Computer.local] :- jim$

here type exit and return and see if this will return you to the normal graphical login window.

...thanks NT, but I can't get it to take anything I've thrown at it. I don't clearly know my 'login'...because I've never had to use it before. I've tried: jim cancil, jimcancil, jim-cancils, jim cancils .....and then the only pswd. I've used in the past decade. I get "Incorrect Login" and then the little merry-go-round, and it asking me again.

....since this iBook is also mine - you think the login info would be available here?

I've also tried: disk repair and Disk Warrior - who both said they fixed stuff.

Any other thoughts?

I assume, since you never log in, that you have it set to automatically log in for you? Your log in was created way back when you set up your computer. Try to remember the name of your home folder - that should be your login...

This G4 is about three yrs old, but I 'always' (I hope) use the same names and pswds as I'm forgetful. Yes, I've never had to Login in before in my whole Mac life..

Now that I'm seemingly unable to get past this login screen - is there some way to reset my name/pswd. so I can do this, or will I have to do the whole new system over again?!

Fricking upgrades! I'll wait for 30days from now on.

Boot from your OS X CD. Once it loads, choose "Disk Utility" from the menu and repair permissions. See if that helps.

My guess is that SystemStarter is not starting. Perhaps it's a permissions issue.

Worst case scenario, you have to put your computer (what kind of computer is it?) into Target Disk mode and back up your files onto your iBook or burn them to a CD. Then boot your computer from the OS X CD again and try Archive and Install.

I got my system to this point from a worse situation. Once I'm logged in, what commands can I type to try and start the GUI? What would cause the GUI from not starting like this in the first place?

Well it's not like it did this to everybody's computer...

It sounds like you crashed or had some other problem while the installer was going that has caused these problems. Regardless, in the worst case scenario, you just have to back up your files, and do an "archive and install" of the OS - this *should* leave your personal files intact, but just in case it doesn't you'll have your backup.

PS - while its true you may never have had to log on in your "Mac life," you should realize that OS X is a multi-user operating system, where logging on is a normal part of using a computer. This has many advantages, even for a single-person user, but it's worth getting used to logging in and remembering passwords and the like. For example, you'd need an administrator password to install many applications, modify some preferences, or unlock particular key chains....

cpac: ...but I AM a single user. I run three alone and my wife does email only on this IMac at home - perhaps an hour a week. All my computers seem to have the same user name and password, but the Login in still won't let me in... I'm sure Unix or whatever I am seeing is very interesting to some, but I'm photoshop/dreamweaver for the past ten years and really only need this this computer as a fancy pencil (I don't care where lead comes from - or how they get that in a little round hole) ...and the more recent OS's have forced themselves on me in a way I wished they hadn't. As kludgy as OS9 was, it somehow did not need me to reinstall the fricking OS every six months.

...I just did a complete brain rinse on that G4 last week, and it was working fine 'till this weekends "upgrades". I suspect the problem came when attempting to dnld three rather large files with a 28K dialup and only got a complete QT...why I ever took that in anyway?
I don't use it...

....if you could get the upgrades on a disk. Noooo - not even when you bought a new machine. I got the same old 10.3 disks with the iBook.

I'll probably do another complete HD rinse and start all over again. I was smart enough to buy a spare HD to copy files on. I lost a sh_t pile of decent files two crashes before last.

I am begininng to resent Job's Gulfstream when my OS is this shitty ...and, he's getting ready to put gold toilets in the plane by charging us again for another "upgrade" next Spring.

understood. But the os IS a multi-user os. Even if you're just a single user.

you're being quite ridiculous. It's a great OS, it seems that **you've** just had issues installing an upgrade.

If your regular login and password aren't working it does appear that something on your system is seriously messed up (if that wasn't already clear from the fact that you're seeing the unix shell at all). You should just do an archive and install using your original installation disks. (You can then download the combined updater to get all your upgrades working properly.
