For some reason I can't get any .dmg disc images to mount. I thought I just had some bad downloads or something but I get the same error message with files I've opened before without any trouble. I've tried a couple of the mounting programs on VersionTracker, I've restarted several times, I've redownloaded files, all to no avail.

I get this error

The following images failed to mount:

nameofimage error -536870208

I recently installed the latest update, but I think this started before then, although I'm really not sure. I also had a kernal panic recently because I had tons of tabs open in Camino and it probably got overloaded.

Anyone else having a problem like this after the update?

I some times had problems with disk utility, but a log off usually fixed it...
(also, I've tried to find the disk utility's error list on the internet, but couldn't find anything...)

It seems that you've got a problem with the system (and not just DU)
Have you tried logging as another user and try DU?

If it still persists, back up the important stuff and do a clean install (that ususally solves everything

Logging off doesn't do anything. And I'd really like to avoid reinstalling the OS. That seems excessive considering that I don't have any weird software or anything. Has anyone had a persistent problem opening .dmg files?

I had the same issue. I checked the system logs, and saw this:

Nov 8 13:08:58 localhost kextd[85]: a different version of dependency extension /System/Library/Extensions/IOStorageFamily.kext is already loaded

From that I guessed that the extensions cache had not been cleared after I updated to 10.3.6, so I deleted /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache and rebooted.

Problem solved - hope it works for you too.

That worked beautifully! Thanks for the tip.

But really, I can't figure out how you could have figured that out from the logs and that one error message. I wasn't even sure which logs to look at without searching for the error message you quoted.

Anyway, thanks again. I'm now using the latest versions of Firefox and Thunderbird. Yeah!

The message implied that it was trying to load two different versions of the IOStorageFamily extension, which is the core driver for disk devices. There weren't two copies of the driver, so I figured the one was probably cached - I've seen a few random issues with the extensions cache, and removing that seems to be a good start when things go wrong.

I'll second that! Reinstalling just wasn't so appealing.

I know what you mean, but I invested two years in seting my backup systems in a way that I it only takes 10 minutes to restore everything, so I'm a fan of re-installing Ah Ah Ah... (evil laugh)

Backup systems? If only I did that. At least most everything that's important to me passes through my email account, which is on an IMAP server and therefore backed up on several computers. Everything else . . .
