This may be new in 10.3.6, not sure.

I did this with a jpg. I renamed it, then clicked the location it was going to sort to after the renaming... it then showed the preview as before, but also overlaid another copy of the image over to the left.

This may only work with images that are taller than they are wide. Wider images just seem to flicker a bit

PDFs just seem to flicker, even if they are taller than they are wide. Not sure though, I can't seem to find many images around to test.

Can anyone tell me if this happens to them too, or if it has been around before 10.3.6?

The Finder has an overlaying bug indeed. And it's not just for graphics.

I deal with many text files that rather often change on the fly (remotely edited). If I have such a text file selected in a Finder's column view window I get a preview of the text. If the file gets saved with some changes while selected, the Finder displays a new text preview overlaid on the old one.

It works with any text file actually.

It has been around for quite some time already. And 10.3.6 did not improve it.

Along with the Finder window settings bug (after starting the Finder the first window displayed never follows your settings - you have to close it and open a second window to get one with your settings) this bug must be one of the most stubborn in the OS X Finder. It has been around for so long now and Apple firmly refuses to fix it. It's kind of ridiculous if you consider how easily it can be (re-)produced. I've written bug reports to Apple dozens of times, but nothing happens.
