Like a lot of people here I have several menubar extra's open in my menubar. In my case it's 10, so it's getting quite crowded up there. What I'd like to see is this: a menubar extra dock that slide open either with a hot-key or by clicking it's icon. I've made a quick & dirty example of what I mean. Does my idea make sense at all??

It makes sense, I've seen lots of screenshots with people with tons of menubar items. I think a rip-off of XP's system tray would be more elegant. Maybe a little thumb that the user could slide to show/hide items.

It sounds like a great idea, but I know many people will not like it, so as long as there is a way to turn it off.

It does sounds like something that people with small screens will appreciate though, and OS X doesn't really seemed targeted for small screens. It usually seems that the iBook and 12" powerbook get backseat in application design.

this would be awesome... especially if you had the option to have some icons in there and some just on the menubar as usual

I actually made such a program a year or two ago. Writing a program to run Menu Extras yourself is pretty easy thanks to the modularity offered by Cocoa, but it turned out that on all post-10.1 systems, most of Apple's Menu Extras don't actually exist -- they're hardcoded into SystemUIServer. The files you see in the Menu Extras folder are basically just stubs. So the program wasn't capable of opening most of the Menu Extras you care about.

Now that I think about it, though, implementing it as a Menu Extra might open some new possibilities.
