I'd just leave it connected overnight and let it download while you sleep. Should be done by the time you get up.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

You could always ask a friend to download the "combo update" from Apple and then burn it to a CD for you (or you could do it yourself on their machine if they are up for it). It is a standalone .dmg updater that you run locally from your machine (software update NOT required and the updater doesn't have to be run on the machine it is downloaded to).
Here is what you'd need to download

Hopefully they will ship a few capital letters and full stops (uh, 'periods') along with that software update.

Ha!

Ya know, PurpleGiant, you have to be patient with some of our posting brethren because English may be their second (or third, etc.) language! I mean, note the location: WV...

Sorry, just a joke, really!

The download size for all the updates for me now is over 35mb. I'm on 56k and can't do it. My mom won't let me leave the internet on all night (because *someone* *might* call). So I'd be really nice if Apple offered a CD to those of us who still live in the dark ages.
iBook G4: 800mhz, 640mb, 40gb ("Astrid")
iPod: 30gb Photo ("Gordon"), 1gb Shuffle ("Tinker Bell")
For the record: I am female
