The key commands for Exposé seem artificailly limited. Digging around in the keyboard shortcuts prefs doesn't reveal anything, either. I've got a set of actions in Photoshop that I've had mapped to F9-11 for over five years, and I'd really like to move Exposee to the three (on the newest Apple keyboard) F keys above help, home and page up.

Any way to hack a prefs file to do this?

Edit: I opened my prefs folder, sorted by date modified, and changed an Exposé pref. Thi file that was modified is called com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist but I'm not adept enogh at reading these things to have any clue what part of it to edit.

You'll be wanting to take a look at that thread I kicked along a few months back. I never did bother to work out how to map F16, moving back to an Apple Pro keyboard as I did, but that should help a bit.

[EDIT - Or just skip all that jibba jabba and go straight to the source]

Okay, that got me all hot and bothered, but no joy for some reason. There's a guy who posted that he got F14-16 working, and how he modified the plist, and I did exactly that, saved the file, and still F9-11. Waaah.

I just dug out the Apple Keyboard that came with my eMac and got it working.

First, in the Exposé preference pane, I allocated All windows to F11, Application windows to F12 and Desktop to F13.

Quit System Preferences, open ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist in BBEdit or TextEdit or your text editor of choice and look for <integer>103</integer>. Change 103 to 107. This makes F11 into F14. Repeat for 111 (change it to 113 to make F12 into F15) and 105 (change it to 106 to make F13 into F16). Do this twice for each F key; it will mean that holding Shift will do a slow-mo version of the desired action, rather than not.

Save and quit and log out and log in. Whammo; you can no longer use F14 or F15 to change brightness/contrast, but you do get to use F14-F16 for Exposé.

It was just the log out/in part I was missing. Got it. Thanks.
