I have a friend who has just converted to a Mac. He used a USB Flash HD. He says that when he deletes items from it, it annoys him that they are always moved to the Trash folder and not deleted. Is it possible to instead of moving items to the Trash, delete them right away?

Thanks,

t

Not in the Finder.

The whole point of the Trash is to make deletion somewhat undoable. Immediate deletion is hazardous. The Mac interface guidelines (and general good interface design) dictate that a destructive function should be undoable, or require confirmation. Something to make it hard to accidentally cause damage.

If your friend absolutely can't live with the trash, the rm command in the Terminal can be used to delete without confirmation. (Not that I recommend it.)

I also think there might be a contextual menu item out there to delete without confirmation. Search versiontracker and macupdate.

He can always use "Command+Delete" to move them to the trash and "Command+Shift+Delete" to delete them without having to to to the trash. It's pretty fast.
